Echinacea is used primarily to treat disorders of the blood, such as poisonous bites of insects and snakes, gangrene, carbuncles and abscesses. However, recent studies show Echinacea to have immuno stimulant, antiviral, antiexudative, anti-inflammatory, bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties.
Today Echinacea is used primarily to build resistance to infections in the respiratory and digestive tracts. Parthenium has often been substituted for Echinacea.
Note: In both the Golden seal and Bugleweed combination and the Parthenium and Golden seal combination, parthenium was the herb of choice. Parthenium contains mucilaginous compounds that increase immune response, sequester infections and sooth inflamed tissues. Parthenium has been used to treat wounds, infections, blood poisoning, inflammatory skin conditions and tonsillitis.
