Herbs Used for Low Blood Sugar

Please read my disclaimer before proceeding!

Licorice Root:  Licorice Root’s role in treating hypoglycemia is to increase the effectiveness of glucocorticoids circulating in the liver, and to mimic the action of these hormones itself.  The use of Licorice Root along or in conjunction with drugs used to treat adrenal insufficiency, prevents the destruction (through atrophy) of the adrenal glands that usually occurs when drugs alone are used.

Gotu Kola :  Used to build up good adrenal health.

Siberian Ginseng:  Through the interplay of its many active constituents, is often able to normalize physiological imbalances.  In this case, research has shown that it can raise abnormally low blood sugar levels.  Ginseng’s effect on blood sugar levels is an indirect result of its effect on the total organism.

Ginger Root:  Although it probably does not have a direct effect on blood sugar levels, Ginger is an important herb for hypoglycemics to use.  It works directly to increase the availability of dietary nutrients for digestion and metabolism.
